Dermal Fillers: Your Non-Surgical Solution for Youthful-Looking Skin
A recent survey found that nearly 80% of United States adults experience skin concerns, such as wrinkles and sagging jowls. If you’re one of them, you might assume that cosmetic surgery is the best way to address these issues, but that isn’t necessarily the case.
Thanks to the rise of cosmetic injectables, including Botox and dermal fillers, improving your skin’s appearance is easier and less invasive than ever.
At Zarcone Vein & Aesthetics, which serves residents of Port Washington and the Gold Coast, New York, John Zarcone, MD, FACS, FACPh, RVT, offers injectables, such as dermal fillers.
This article explains dermal fillers, highlights what they can treat, and discusses what to expect during treatment.
Understanding dermal fillers
Dermal fillers are cosmetic injectables designed to make your skin look firmer and younger. They contain hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which smooth wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance.
Together, these can minimize signs of aging, so you can feel confident in your skin. Because fillers are administered via injection, there are no incisions or downtime.
Most people can return to their normal routine immediately after treatment, and results typically appear within a few days.
Skin conditions that dermal fillers can help treat
Dr. Zarcone uses dermal fillers to treat various skin imperfections, including:
- Lost volume in the cheeks and temples
- Under-eye bags
- Thinning or wrinkly lips
- Wrinkles around the mouth
- Sagging jowls
Dermal fillers can also be used to improve the appearance of facial contours, such as the chin and jawline.
What to expect during dermal filler treatment
Dermal filler treatment is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 30-60 minutes.
Before recommending fillers, Dr. Zarcone reviews your health history and asks about your goals, including which areas of skin you’d like to treat. Tell him if you take any medications or have any allergies.
After gathering that information, Dr. Zarcone examines your face and takes photos to compare your results before and after treatment. Then, he determines what type of fillers to use and applies a cream on your face to numb your skin.
Once the anesthetic sets in, Dr. Zarcone carefully administers a series of dermal filler injections. The number of injections you receive will depend on your skin’s appearance and treatment goals.
After Dr. Zarcone is finished administering your injections, he provides aftercare instructions. For optimal results, avoid strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours and don’t press or touch the injection sites.
In the days following treatment, it’s normal to develop mild bruising and redness. However, these symptoms should subside within a day or two.
Some people notice positive changes in their skin within a few days, but it may take up to several weeks. Be patient and carefully follow Dr. Zarcone’s instructions.
